چکیده

Introduction Manual palpation through digital rectal examination is an established method for prostate cancer screening. Unfortunately, the technique is highly subjective and has limited spatial resolution. Prostate MR Elastography (MRE) could address these shortcomings by mapping stiffness throughout the entire gland. Recent work suggests that intracavitary approaches using transurethral actuators can generate the frequency and amplitude of shear wave motion in the prostate gland necessary to detect clinically relevant tumours [1]. The Local Frequency Estimation (LFE) algorithm [2] [3] [4] has been used successfully in a number of applications to calculate shear stiffness from shear wave images acquired with MRE. In comparison with other tissue property reconstruction methods, it produces minimal amounts of image artifacts and does not require smoothing [5]. By modifying conventional LFE algorithms from the literature, elastogram resolution was increased without increasing noise, and controls are introduced where the user can, at runtime, fine-tune the tradeoff between high resolution and low noise, as the situation demands.

Evaluating the Feasibility of Multi-Slice Endorectal Magnetic Resonance Elastography for Prostate Cancer Localization

Introduction: The stiffness of malignant prostate tissue is elevated as compared to normal or benign tissue, which suggests that the biomechanical properties of prostate tissue may be an independent marker for prostate cancer. Using dynamic MR elastography, micrometer amplitude shear waves are propagated into tissue, and the resulting tissue displacements are measured to calculate the underlyin...

The future perspectives in transrectal prostate ultrasound guided biopsy

Prostate cancer is one of the most common neoplasms in men. Transrectal ultrasound (TRUS)-guided systematic biopsy has a crucial role in the diagnosis of prostate cancer. However, it shows limited value with gray-scale ultrasound alone because only a small number of malignancies are visible on TRUS. Recently, new emerging technologies in TRUS-guided prostate biopsy were introduced and showed hi...

Magnetic resonance elastography of the brain

The purpose of this study was to obtain normative data using magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) (a) to obtain estimates of the shear modulus of human cerebral tissue in vivo and (b) to assess a possible age dependence of the shear modulus of cerebral tissue in healthy adult volunteers. MR elastography studies were performed on tissue-simulating gelatin phantoms and 25 healthy adult volunteer...

Improvements in Hepatic Stiffness Assessment with 3-D/3-axis MR Elastography

Introduction: MR Elastography (MRE) (1) is an MRI-based technique for quantitatively assessing the mechanical properties of soft tissues by studying the propagation of shear waves. Multiple studies (2-4) have reported on developments of MRE for assessing the viscoelastic properties of abdominal organs. In general, MRE inversion algorithms require datasets that sample the pattern of wave propaga...

Patient-specific Deformation Modelling via Elastography: Application to Image-guided Prostate Interventions

Image-guided prostate interventions often require the registration of preoperative magnetic resonance (MR) images to real-time transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) images to provide high-quality guidance. One of the main challenges for registering MR images to TRUS images is how to estimate the TRUS-probe-induced prostate deformation that occurs during TRUS imaging. The combined statistical and biomec...
